About the LFC biodigester for ships
The LFC® biodigester is a commercial aerobic biodigester that breaks down food waste in 24 hours. It uses a series of processes in which microorganisms decompose biodegradable materials in the presence of oxygen. The output is greywater, which can be pumped directly overboard or treated by the ship’s wastewater treatment system.
Using Power Knot’s LFC biodigesters on ships ensures that organic waste can be safely disposed of without plastics entering the ocean. With hundreds of units deployed on cruise ships, cargo ships, FSRUs, tankers, and mega yachts, Power Knot Ocean brings seven years of experience in solving organic waste problems on ships while complying with MARPOL regulations.

FUNCTIONING
The LFC® biodigester uses a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable materials in the presence of oxygen.

Organic waste
Organic waste is separated from other types of waste and placed in the LFC biodigester.

Microorganisms
A special blend of Powerzymes microorganisms is housed within the Powerchips.

Oxygen
The paddles of the LFC biodigester rotate to add oxygen and begin aerobic digestion.

Digestion
Microorganisms eat food waste and transform it into water.

To go out
Discarded into the waste stream.
Prevent plastic pollution with the LFC biodigester
The mechanical design of biodigesters ensures that organic waste can be safely disposed of without plastics entering the ocean.
If inorganic material enters the biodigester, it is not digested by microorganisms. Several layers of protection, such as metal grids and filters, prevent plastics from contaminating the waste stream. The plastics remain safely contained within the machine until removed by the operator.
The result is grey water free of contaminated microplastics that can be pumped directly overboard or treated by the ship’s wastewater treatment plant.
