Sustainable Operations
Known for its breathtaking natural beauty, Vomo Island Fiji offers an exclusive and tranquil escape for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure. With a strong commitment to sustainability, Vomo Island Fiji seamlessly blends eco-conscious practices with high-end luxury, creating an unparalleled guest experience.
In June 2023, Vomo Island Fiji sought to improve cost and operations and found success in the implementation of a Power Knot LFC-300 biodigester to minimize ecological footprints and enhance guest experiences.
Vomo Island Fiji faced significant sustainability challenges. The resort wanted to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Cut high waste management costs
- Optimize logistical difficulty of shipping waste off the remote island thrice weekly
- Improve their sustainability practices
Five years ago, Vomo Island Resort began an online search for effective food waste management systems. The search aimed to find a solution capable of handling the resort’s unique needs and constraints. After evaluating various composting and food waste digestion options, Vomo Island Fiji chose Power Knot’s LFC-300 biodigester. The decision was influenced by multiple machine capacity options and highly responsive communication between Power Knot and Vomo Island Resort.
Implementing the LFC-300 biodigester
Improved operational workflow
The LFC-300 biodigester is set up in a waste processing plant at the resort. The operational process includes:
- Food waste collection: Waste is collected regularly from two restaurants and a staff canteen each of which serves 300-400 people three meals a day.
- Storage: Collected waste is stored in a cold room before being dumped into the biodigester.
- Processing: The biodigester processes up to 900 kg of food waste daily, transforming it into a liquid that feeds into the septic system. This recycled waste helps nurture the golf course greenery.
Benefits and Impact
Environmental and operational benefits
- Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: By processing food waste on-site, the resort significantly reduces its carbon footprint.
- Cost savings: The resort saves on the costs associated with shipping waste off the island.
- Sustainability enhancement: The biodigester aligns with the resort’s rebranding efforts towards improved sustainability.
The LFC-300 biodigester at Vomo Island Resort is processing up to 4400 kg (9700 lb) of food waste a month, which effectively diverts 18.4 tonne of CO2e from the atmosphere. This environmental effort translates to preventing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to driving 75,700 km (47,000 miles) or planting over 300 trees in terms of environmental impact.
Vomo Island Fiji’s adoption of Power Knot’s LFC-300 biodigester exemplifies their commitment to sustainable luxury. They are the first in Fiji to implement recycling and technologically advanced waste handling methods and have paved the way for other businesses to follow suit. By integrating advanced waste management technology, the resort not only reduces its environmental impact but also enhances operational efficiency and guest satisfaction.
